Planning Enforcement
Over the past two years, the Town Council has played an active role in boosting planning enforcement by contributing financial to increasing resource.
As a result, 20 sites have been identified and contacted with 6 cases now closed after the necessary works were carried out.
Most recently improvements are being made to the Esplande hotel, the corner of Fitzroy Street and at the Park Bury Hotel.
Urban Acupuncture
Urban acupuncture is a regeneration approach that uses small, precise, high‑impact interventions to improve the wider urban environment. The Isle of Wight Council and Bay Area Place Plan explicitly highlight this concept, noting that “a network of small interventions can help make a big impact” building confidence and momentum for larger regeneration efforts.
Mary Ellis (Eastern Gardens)
The Bay Place Plan aims to deliver projects that reflect the Bay’s past, present and future.
Mary Ellis is one of the Isle of Wight’s most remarkable historical figures — a natural fit for Sandown’s cultural storytelling.
The mural and information Plaque seeks to celebrate: someone who embodies local pride, history, and inspiration for future generations. It celebrates local heritage, inspires community pride, and brings colour and identity to a public spaces frequented by visitor and residents like
Los Altos Improvements
Sandown Town Council no longer leases Los Altos Park from the Isle of Wight Council. While the management of the site has returned to the Isle of Wight Council, Sandown Town Council’s invested in enhancing the community space last year.
Recent improvements include carvings to repurpose felled tree as log benches and the installation of a wooden activity trail — part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to creating welcoming, engaging, and family‑friendly outdoor areas.
These additions celebrate local craftsmanship and encourage residents and visitors alike to enjoy Sandown’s parks and open spaces.
The Ocean Hotel Redelopment Site
THE TOWN COUNCIL HAS ACQUIRED THE LAND TO THE FRONT OF THE OCEAN HOTEL
We are pleased to confirm that the Town Council have acquired the strip of land to the front of the Ocean Hotel.
While the main hotel site poses a significant challenge, with leases and a related Serious Fraud Office case, parts of the site have now been sold.
This is an important step forward in securing the future of this prominent site for the benefit of our community.
THE LAND WE HAVE ACQUIRED
The land shown dashed in green on the map has been acquired by Sandown Town Council.
This strip of land runs along the Esplanade fronting the Ocean Hotel.
NEXT STEPS
We will begin clearance of the site once an expert has confirmed that we can start works without harming any wildlife.
This is to enhance the site’s overall condition, safety and appearance.
The works will include the systematic clearance and tidying of the area, the removal of accumulated waste, debris and rubble.
Following this, the unmanaged vegetation and overgrowth will be cleared and the ground levelled. Existing hedges are also being trimmed and reshaped as necessary to maintain boundaries and improve presentation.
Once the site is cleared and levelled, hoarding will be installed to separate the redevelopment area from the rest of the site and reduce the impact of the derelict building on the seafront.

This is your land, your town and your future. Thank you for your continued support.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
We will now begin exploring options for the future use and improvement of this key site.

CCTV
CCTV Investment in Community Safety
Sandown Town Council has invested in modern CCTV systems across its sites in key public locations, including the town’s public toilets, the Broadway Centre, and Sandham Grounds and its parks. They are also working with the local bowling club to secure further coverage at the site.
This investment reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, welcoming spaces for residents and visitors.
The CCTV network helps:
Deter vandalism and anti‑social behaviour
Protect public facilities and community assets
Support the police and emergency services when incidents occur
Enhance safety for staff, volunteers, and the public
By investing in CCTV, Sandown Town Council is helping to safeguard community spaces and ensure they remain enjoyable and secure for everyone.
