The role of a councillor

Councillors constitute the council and are democratically elected by the local population. The role of a local councillor is not defined in law but is essentially to represent the local community, contributing to decisions made by the council. This can include

• responding to residents’ questions, investigating their concerns, leading campaigns on their behalf.

• Being aware of, communicating and liaising with other bodies locally (including interest groups and businesses)

• communicating council decisions to residents and representing residents views at council meetings.

• working/communicating with representatives of local organisations, interest groups and businesses.

Wards 

Sandown is divided into two electoral wards; Sandown South and Sandown North.

Role

The Mayor is the Chairman of the council and it is their role to preside over meetings and to undertake civic duties on behalf of the council.
